Corneille * (Gorinchem, 1922– 2010) - Corneille was one of the founders and one of the most important representatives of the Cobra movement. He was a very prolific artist and has created an enormous amount of paintings, sculptures and graphics. Initially strongly influenced by Picasso, but later with the style characteristics of the Cobra, which are very familiar to Corneille. Corneille has worked abstractly, but from about 1960 he works figuratively with the well-known birds, women and flowers as subjects.
Corneille's work can be found in many corporate, private and museum collections, including of course the Cobra Museum in Amstelveen and the national collection. Corneille was an important and leading artist whose work featured in more than 1,000 exhibitions and exhibitions at home and abroad, and dozens of which were personal exhibitions.
