Jan Ouwenbroek* (Maasluis- 7 July 1927) At the age of twelve he received his first drawing and painting lessons from the ladies Van der Doll and later from Johann Oberreiter at the Municipal Nijverheids Evening School. Here he developed into a valued painter with a passion that would last a lifetime.

Initially, his work mainly consisted of city and village views, farms, still lifes and landscapes, mostly painted in and around Maassluis. From the mid-1960s he visited France, Austria, Italy and Spain. These countries offered new inspiration. During that time he also started working in acrylic.

He prefers to paint directly in nature, and then finish the work in his studio. Later he focused more on making abstract matter paintings. He composed them with acrylic paint and medium, sand, gauze, rope and waste materials.

Jan is now more than 90 years old, still paints daily with heart and soul and cherishes the variety of the techniques he has mastered and is an honorary member of the Maassluise Artists Foundation. At the time, he was awarded the Maassluis Cultural Prize for his contribution to culture in Maassluis.
